The Beat Goes On
12 July 2008 to 1 November 2009

From The Beatles to The Zutons, Liverpool is a city buzzing with musical talent and The Beat Goes On will be a celebration of Liverpool’s edginess, energy and creativity.

The exhibition explores the city’s musical identity, its success and its continuing evolution. Visitors will be able to find out about the city’s rich musical heritage beginning with the early musical influences from across the Atlantic during the 1940s and 1950s, to the phenomenal success of Merseybeat and the continuing popularity of Merseyside musicians today.

To get the full audio-visual experience, visitors will have access to audio points, jukeboxes and fascinating films. There will also be the opportunity to mix your own version of the OMD track, ‘Electricity’ and try out your singing voice in a karaoke-style room. Expect to see rare Beatles memorabilia, including the jacket worn by John Lennon during the band’s 1964 tour and the vibrant ‘All You Need is Love’ bedcover from John and Yoko’s Bed-in-for-Peace demonstration in Montreal in 1969. The exhibition will also look at more contemporary artists, with material about The Coral and The Zutons and current club nights such as Chibuku.

The Beat Goes On is the first exhibition of its kind and draws on a wealth of material from record companies, institutions and private collectors as well as fascinating objects from National Museum Liverpool’s own collection.

So how can you get involved?

Local bands can make friends with the The Beat Goes On’s MySpace page for a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of the exhibition. Each month we will be selecting a Top Ten of Merseyside’s up and coming acts for the public to vote on. The winning track each month will be added to the digital jukebox in the exhibition, alongside Liverpool’s finest acts! Even if you’re not a musician you can still make friends with us, listen to some great tunes and take part in our poll – so GET VOTING!
