Unions08 Launch & Photo Competition

Focus on working lives launches TUC’s contribution to Capital of Culture
January 14 2008

With 2008 being Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture, the TUC is inviting people to display their own images of working life in the city.

Both amateur and professional photographers can submit their photographs of working in Liverpool to the TUC’s specially-created Liverpool ’08 website www.unions08.co.uk

Each photo will go onto the website’s photo gallery and will then be entered into the TUC’s “Liverpool Working Lives’’ photography competition. The winners in both the professional and amateur categories will win £250, with £100 going to the runners-up and £50 to those finishing third.

Plans are being made to exhibit the winning photos and a selection of the other eye-catching entries at a city centre location during the summer.

Alan Manning, the TUC’s North West Regional Secretary, said that the competition and the website were an enjoyable way of highlighting working life in Liverpool while the city is in the international spotlight.

He added: “We want to celebrate the contribution of working people to this city and its culture. We are kicking off with a project that is aimed at showing Liverpool at work that is created by Liverpool’s workers.

“At the end of the competition, we will have an exhibition that we will tour around the region, from the city centre through to Kirkby and Bootle. Liverpool workers will have created a unique photographic record of Liverpool working lives.’’

The competition runs until June 13, when judging will take place. Full terms and conditions for the competition – including instructions on uploading your photographs – can be found on the website.

www.unions08.co.uk also features news and events pages to highlight what the TUC and other organisations have arranged for the Capital of Culture year.

Having appointed Anne Thornton as its Arts Co-ordinator, the TUC in the North West is planning a programme of Liverpool ’08 events.

These include:

* A heritage trail of the city, visiting key locations and remembering Liverpool’s strong trade union legacy.

* The production of a play based on Robert Tressell’s famous and groundbreaking book “The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists’’.

* Participation in the Liverpool Fringe Festival…and much more.
