A lot of design news coming through at the moment – which is good.
I was surprised the Letterpool project won a major award because although it is very good, I thought it was just a fun project that the people at Switch Media did in their spare time. But, of course, those sort of projects are often the best, being free of client specs, market research criteria, financial constraints etc. Its just a simple, elegant website showing images of text around the streets of Liverpool. Some brilliant images. Soon to be a book too apparently.
Here’s the press release…
CREATIVE agency Switch Media is going for Gold after scooping a major design award for their Liverpool based art project Letterpool.
Switch Media, hailed as one of the fastest growing technology companies in the UK, were awarded Gold in the Fresh Creative Awards 2009 for best use of Typography.
The awards, held at the Printworks Odeon in Manchester, recognise creativity and innovation in the Creative, Digital and Media arenas around the region.
The Liverpool web design and internet service provider was one of only a handful of entries awarded the prestigious Gold award – establishing them as one of the UK’s key digital agencies.
Aaron Bimpson, Switch Media commercial director, said: “We’re really proud of the whole team at Switch Media for the win at this year’s Fresh Awards.
“We were especially pleased as it was for Letterpool – a home-grown art project of ours.
“Other award nominees included national big-hitters such as McCann Erickson and The Chase, so to come home with a Gold award for Typography is welcome recognition of the standard of design work we have been producing this year.
“This is the first awards we have ever entered and did so with the view that whilst economic times are tough, it is even more important to celebrate creative success and innovative thinking
“To win Gold – one of the top awards given out on the night – is really rewarding.”
Letterpool was a project to collect images of great Liverpool typography, whether on signs, buildings or on works of art.
The project received extensive national and local media coverage – being featured on Channel 4 and in publications including METRO, the Liverpool Daily Post and .NET Magazine.
Switch Media, based in Fenwick Street, have now selected the best Letterpool entries for a special hard back book about the art project.
The book will be launched on November 2009 in Liverpool and is being published by Switch Media Press.
