Soundings brings together talks by artists, writers, cultural historians and curators in conversation with Professor Colin Fallows. Speakers explore painting and performance, poetry and music both evident in and referenced to in the Centre of the Creative Universe: Liverpool and the Avant-garde exhibition.

Painting; Performance
John Baum
John Baum was Lecturer at the Liverpool Regional College of Art/Polytechnic (1965-1989) and Head of Art at Coleg Menai, Bangor (1989-1994). He is a major British figurative painter and was one of the leading exponents of New Realism in painting in the UK in the 1970s. Although his current works differ in style, his obsession with depicting human figures in a contemporary setting has remained consistent throughout his career. His structured compositions are known for their fine draughtsmanship and unique viewpoint. He was invited to be Artist at Work at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool (2000), and three of his paintings are featured in Centre of the Creative Universe: Liverpool and the Avant-Garde at Tate Liverpool.
Bryan Biggs
Bryan Biggs has been closely involved in the arts in Liverpool since he first came to the city in the early 1970s. He is an artistic administrator and curator, working in various roles at Bluecoat Arts Centre, where he is now Artistic Director. He has curated many exhibitions, including the 2002 Liverpool Biennial International and Walk On, an exhibition for the 2006 Shanghai Biennale. He has written about contemporary art and popular music for publications such as Bidoun, Third Text and Strange Things Are Happening, and is an artist in his own right known for his drawings.

Barry Miles
Barry Miles was the co-founder of Indica Books and Gallery in 1966 and International Times (IT), the first European underground newspaper. In 1968 Paul McCartney appointed him head of Zapple, the Beatles’ spoken word label. He specialises in writing about the Beat Generation and is the author of many books including: ‘A Catalogue of the William S. Burroughs Archive’ (1973), ‘Allen Ginsberg: A Biography’ (1989), ‘William Burroughs: El Hombre Invisible’ (1992), ‘Jack Kerouac: King of the Beats’ (1998), ‘Beat Hotel’ (2000), the best selling ‘Paul McCartney: Many Years From Now’ (1997), Frank Zappa (2004) and Pink Floyd: The Early Years (2007)
Catherine Marcangeli
Catherine Marcangeli is a graduate of the Ecole Normale Supérieure and the Sorbonne University, Paris. She is a Fulbright Scholar at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University and gained a Doctorate in Contemporary American Art, Sorbonne, Paris. She is Senior Lecturer in British and American studies, Paris University – Denis Diderot and Lecturer in French 19th and 20th century art at Columbia University, Paris programme. She has given lectures on British, American and French 19th and 20th century art in various museums and universities in the UK and USA and is editor of the forthcoming collection ‘Adrian Henri: Selected and Unpublished’ (2007).
