Schoolchildren Create ‘Dazzle Island’ Artwork for their Playground

Following on from the Dazzle Ship and the Dazzle Ferry, the Dazzle Island was launched today. It was cold but, thankfully, dry as representatives from the organisations involved gathered round the artwork to make speeches to the children and staff in the playground.

It was obviously something the kids enjoyed being involved with, something that many will remember for a long time and today’s event was fun, bringing dazzling smiles all around.

Pupils from three Liverpool schools have worked together with award-winning designers Studio Hato to create a new permanent artwork for the playground of Childwall Sports & Science Academy. Dazzle Island has been inspired by Sir Peter Blake’s Everybody Razzle Dazzle commission for the Mersey Ferry and is part of Curious Minds’ Specialist Leaders in Cultural Education (SLiCE) fellowship programme, between Liverpool Biennial and Childwall Sports & Science Academy.

More than 100 pupils from Childwall Sports & Science Academy, Greenbank Primary and Childwall Valley Primary collaborated with Studio Hato for six months to create Dazzle Island. The children explored different artists’ work and used bespoke digital tools to create symbols for the final design.

Sally Tallant, Director of Liverpool Biennial, said: “It is exciting to see people continuing to engage with the history of dazzle camouflage in Liverpool. We are thrilled that the children from Childwall’s primary and secondary shools have had the opportunity to create their own dazzle artwork for the city.”

Dazzle Island will be at Childwall Sports & Science Academy from 3 September, becoming a new artwork for the city that the pupils can use and enjoy.
