Residency Artists’ Talks
An opportunity to learn more about the responses and work of the current residency artists

I have spent my oneplace residency working exclusively in the Japanese Gardens at Tatton Park. The majority of the work has focussed on two central ideas: The comparison of permanent structures against the flux of nature; and the aperture as a picture frame for viewing idealised vistas. I have temporarily located much of the work within the gardens and documented this as a record of the event: One such piece of work is a series of ice apertures, that mirror the motif of the circle found throughout the garden; another is a collection of Acer leaves frozen in plaster which were temporarily situated within the tea house.
Lucie Potter
Using both sound recording and historical research, Lucie is creating a sound walk that will lead
visitors round part of the parkland at Tatton. Her research covers a range of activities and Lucie will talk about her field recording sessions which have captured the wildlife and activity at Tatton through the day and night. She will also talk about her site research for the route through the park and working with the different departments at Tatton. She will contextualise
her research within the history of Tatton and the Egerton family and the wider changes taking place in the late eighteenth century in Britain that led to Tatton Park developing into the place we experience today.

Sam Clayton and Mark Jacobs
Sam Clayton and Mark Jacobs met in 1997 when they both started their B.A. (Hons) in Fine Art Sculpture at Sheffield Hallam University. After their degrees Mark went on to live and work in York where he co-founded ‘Art in the Tower’, an artist led studio and gallery space in a medieval tower. Sam went on to study on the ‘Art as Environment’ MA at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Sam and Mark then established a working partnership which naturally led to their artistic collaboration, with their first new work being created for the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. This confirmed their shared interest in landscape, history, myth, follies and ruin. It is these themes they hope to now explore during their time at Tatton.
