Phil Disley – Hope – and Barack Obama

Liverpool artist, Phil Disley has had another work published in the Guardian recently. The piece was about Downing Streets gift  for Obama’s inauguration, putting forward the case for Victorian artist George Frederick Watts’s depiction of ‘Hope’ (see the original image below)
The haunting picture hung in the cell of Nelson Mandela and appears also to have been a source of inspiration for the new President.
The Watts Gallery have now featured the drawing on their website and are producing a run of limited edition prints. The proceeds of which are helping towards the 10 million refurbishment of the gallery.
They have also asked Phil to show the image at their opening exhibition in 2010 entitled ‘Hope.’
Prints will be available through the gallery website www.wattsgallery.org.uk
