Panel of Industry Experts revealed for Liverpool Film Night 2016 at FACT

FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) is pleased to announce the panel of industry experts participating in Liverpool Film Night 2016 on 23 November, where local filmmakers are offered the chance to see their short films on the big screen in front of a live audience. This year’s panel members, consisting of distinguished professionals specialising in different fields within the industry, will offer the audience the opportunity to ask for advice about filmmaking, and their respective areas of expertise.

The Q&A will take place after the screening of the films, which are selected by this year’s Head Judge, actor and filmmaker Nick Moss. The panel consists of Clare Binns, Director of Programming & Acquisitions at Picturehouse Cinemas; Lynn Saunders, Manager of Liverpool Film Office; and Director Martin Wallace, International Emmy and Royal Television Society award winner and BAFTA nominee. Together, they will take to the stage to answer questions from the audience about all aspects of filmmaking, and how to gain experience in the film industry.

Martin Wallace, who was also a 2007 entrant to the Liverpool Film Night, says: “Showing your film on the big screen is the best way to learn how to improve your film making. Watching it with an audience, you suddenly see, in a way that is otherwise impossible, exactly what works and what doesn’t.”

Liverpool Film Night is the only film event dedicated to supporting and showcasing regional film talent, and last year saw over 50 films submitted. A decade of sell-out events have seen on-screen talent include big names such as the late Pete Postlethwaite and Jarvis Cocker, and past judges include Anfield-born award-winning animator and director Chris Shepherd.

Submissions of films in any genre are welcome before 19 October, with the only restrictions being that the film must have been made within the last 18 months and be no more than 15 minutes in length. Submission guidelines and information about how to submit can be found on fact.co.uk/lfn2016

Also this autumn, FACT is pleased to launch the Filmmaker Talent Development Programme – an exciting new opportunity for professional filmmakers in the Northwest and North Wales to develop their film and new media skills. Funded by Creative England and delivered by FACT in collaboration with partners from industry, creative and cultural sectors, this free six-month programme of workshops, running from November 2016 until April 2017, aims to support film talent, creativity and diversity in the region. About Liverpool Film Night 2016 panel members and head judge

Clare Binns has worked in the British film industry for 30 years, and joined Picturehouse in March 2003 where she is Director of Programming and Acquisitions. As well as acquiring titles for Picturehouse Entertainment, she is responsible for overall programming policies for the cinemas. Winner of the 2009 WFTV Award for Contribution to the Medium, she is no. 70 in The Guardian Film Power 100 list while Variety named her one of the 25 people driving the London entertainment scene.

Liverpudlian filmmaker and actor Nick Moss has worked extensively in television and theatre, ranging from low budget movies, to regular roles on prime time British TV drama such as Jimmy McGovern’s BBC series Banished, Hollywood blockbusters such as Hercules, and popular Brit flicks such as Mean Machine. Also a filmmaker, Moss recently won Best UK Short Film at Manchester International Film Festival with his film Break, starring John Hurt and Kika Markham. Break is garnering significant accolades and awards on the festival circuit, and is officially selected for many more upcoming international festivals. Nick is currently working in post production on other short films and is developing his first feature film, which he hopes to shoot in 2017. He is also a teacher at Rare Studios on Wood Street.

Lynn Saunders is Manager of Liverpool Film Office, Liverpool City Council’s premier film liaison service for film and TV production in the Liverpool City Region. Liverpool has been home to hundreds of productions over the years, from film to TV, commercials and more, and has doubled as a number of international cityscapes, including New York, Chicago, Paris, Rome and Moscow. Recent highlights include Marvel’s Captain America, JK Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Village Roadshow Pictures’ Sherlock Holmes, and BBC2’s Peaky Blinders.

Director Martin Wallace, International Emmy and Royal Television Society award winner and BAFTA nominee, was a 2007 entrant to the Liverpool Film Night. Wallace began making music videos for bands such as China Crisis, Polyphonic Spree, Biffy Clyro and Aphex Twin, and has worked extensively with Pulp and Tindersticks both on promos and long form works. He has also worked closely with international visual artists such as Cristina Lucas, Yoko Ono and Mark Wallinger, helping them realise their large-scale audiovisual ambitions. His debut feature film, Small Creatures had its UK premiere in 2012 at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Michael Powell Awards for Best Performance and Best British Feature.
