Art in the Age of Steam

Capturing the excitement of the steam train, from the earliest days of 1830s to the end of the line in the 1960s, this exhibition explores how artists responded to the extraordinary impact steam trains had on the landscape and society.

Exhibition organised in partnership with The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, USA.

This exhibition features the finished Liverpool Cityscape as well Johnson’s other city paintings, including Zürich, Hong Kong, Paris, Jerusalem and Chicago.

Masterpiece Watercolours and Drawings

This exhibition is a rare opportunity to view some of Lady Lever’s wonderful collection of delicate artworks, many of which have never been on display. On show are works by JMW Turner, John Constable, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Helen Allingham and Kate Greenaway to name just a few.

Shakespeare in the city

‘Our bodies are gardens, to which our wills are gardener.’ 16–21 year olds perform two 45 minute abridgements of Shakespeare’s plays exploring the theme of human frailty. Part of a four day festival across Merseyside. (over 16s)

Culture vultures

Museum highlights

Take your mini time travellers back to Victorian times at Sudley House, the only art collection of a Victorian merchant still in its original domestic setting.

The house features contemporary videos and an introductory display that tells how members of the family and household lived. Upstairs the childhood rooms contain a Norah’s Ark, dolls’ houses and other toys to play with as well exploring how Victorian children learned and played. A costume room has changing displays of period costume and a temporary exhibition gallery.

Sudley House stands in its own grounds so there is plenty of space for running around and a picnic.

The Beat Goes On

12 July 2008 to 1 November 2009

An exhibition inspired by Liverpool’s contribution to popular music over the past 60 years. From the Cavern to Creamfields, from Billy Fury to the Zutons, the city has been home to a staggering range of venues, sounds, performers, fashions and followers. A product of Liverpool’s edginess, energy and creativity we explore and celebrate its musical identity, its success and its continuing evolution. The first exhibition of its kind, it draws together material from record companies, institutions and private collectors.

Big Bang

27 June to 22 September 2008

This travelling exhibition, based on the Science Museum’s new exhibition BIG BANG!, looks at the work of the European Particle Physics Laboratory at CERN and the Large Haldron Collider that allows scientists to recreate the conditions of the universe as it existed in the instant after the Big Bang.

Treasure House Theatre

We hold all sorts of exciting and interesting events in our 80-seat theatre. All tickets are free from the welcome desk. This Capital of Culture year we offer a programme that includes:

World on film

Pop in and see one of our 20-minute films covering subjects such as Ancient Egypt, Saxons, Vikings, and Romans in Britain.

Food for thought

Visit our Time Travel café where our intrepid chef and waiter will take you on a journey through the history of food. Discover how our ancestors fished, grew, fought and found their dinner. But you’ll have to race against time to save the café from closing, before the dodgy TASTIE machine leaves you stranded.

Samurai armour

Examine the armour of a Samurai warrior in this demonstration using replica 16^th century armour. This is your chance to get up close and personal with a piece of history.

Molly the friendly blue whale

Join Rosie or Captain Undersea in this tall tale of a brave whale that escapes a cruel captain (boo), and saves her friends in a storm (hooray). (ages 3-7)

Death on the Nile

Two bungling robbers have sneaked in to the museum, but they get more than they bargained for, when one of them opens an ancient scroll. (over 5s)
