Competition winners see their picture hung in gallery

Competition winners Abby Hewitson and Laura Johnson today saw a picture of themselves hung in the National Conservation Centre, making them part of the exhibition Sound and Vision: Music and Fashion photographed by Francesco Mellina, Liverpool, 1978-82 on until 31 August 2009.

In May the National Conservation Centre launched a competition asking people with unusual or quirky styles to enter and have their picture taken by Francesco Mellina. All of the pictures where judged by National Museums Liverpool’s Helen Robinson, community consultation co-ordinator Helen Robinson and Liverpool designer Kirsty Doyle who both believed that best friends Abby and Laura had the most innovative style.

Kirsty, 2006 winner of Project Catwalk, part of London Fashion Week, says “I chose Abby and Laura as the winners because their style is a mixture of the classic and contemporary rock-chick look, right through the eras, from the 1980s to today.”

The exhibition demonstrates the impact that music had on fashion, on both the bands and gig-goers on the scene. It seems this trend still remains for these students, Abby, 17 says “I love Debbie Harry and Cindy Lauper’s style. I just love dressing up and expressing myself.” While Laura, 17 says, “I suppose I have a rock-chick style, I follow loads of different rock bands and music groups.”

The picture of Abbey and Laura will remain in the exhibition for the duration of its run: the perfect finishing touch proving that Liverpool still has a creative and innovative style.

Sound and Vision: Music and Fashion, photographed by Francesco Mellina, Liverpool 1978-82 reveals a unique visual record the striking individuality and self-expression of gig-goers as well as acts such as Echo and the Bunnymen, The Teardrop Explodes, U2, Roxy Music, The Clash and The Ramones.

At The National Conservation Centre. 1 May – 31 August 2009
