Metal Liverpool calls for votes to bag a share of £12.5million Tesco Bags of Help carrier bag charge fund.
Local arts organisation Metal Liverpool, based at Edge Hill Station, is in the running to receive support from Tesco Bags of Help initiative – but only with your help!
The supermarket has teamed up with Groundwork on its Bags of Help initiative, which sees grants of £12,000, £10,000 and £8,000 – all raised from the 5p bag levy – being awarded to environmental and greenspace projects.
Three groups in each of around 400 Tesco regions have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and this month shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant. Metal Liverpool is one of the groups on the shortlist for the region.
Metal’s Edge Hill Garden project will be a year long programme of art, food and gardening engaging local residents to create a new oasis of calm at this historic location – Edge Hill Station is the oldest active passenger railway station in the world.
Together with Metal, residents of Edge Hill, Kensington, Wavertree and Toxteth will host dinners throughout the year for the local community and schools groups using food grown in the garden. These events will drive learning and awareness of environmental sustainability and explore the importance of how public green spaces benefit our day-to-day lives.
If Metal win the top prize they will also be able to open the space on a daily basis and commission a series of artistic interventions in the space, which will seek to brighten the commute for Edge Hill Station passengers.
Shaun Curtis, Director of Metal explains “We’re really happy to be selected as one of the region’s projects to be funded by Tesco Bags of Help. We share a belief with our local community that arts and culture has a great role to play in making exciting things happen in public space. This grant means that we can create a brand new public space in Edge Hill to be enjoyed by local residents and commuters alike. We hope a new community will form around this small patch of green land and enjoyed for years to come.”
Voting is open in stores from 31 October – 13 November. Customers can cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop.
