Lord David Puttnam to give Roy Stringer Lecture at FACT
18 April 2008
Lord David Puttnam, CBE, the award–winning film producer and President of UNICEF UK will give the Roy Stringer lecture at FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) on Friday 18 April 2008. The lecture is part of the second stage of FACT’s 2008 Human Futures programme, My Mind, focussing on the digital environment and our relationship with artificial life.
Lord David Puttnam spent 30 years as an independent film producer. His many award-winning films include Bugsy Malone (1976), The Mission (1986), The Killing Fields (1984), Local Hero (1983), Chariots of Fire (1981), Midnight Express (1978), and The Memphis Belle (1990). The only non-American to run a Hollywood studio, Lord Puttnam retired from film production in 1998 to focus on his work in education. He has served as Chair of various public bodies including the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts, The National Museum of Photography, Film and Television, BAFTA and Channel 4.
In July 2002, Lord Puttnam was appointed President of UNICEF UK, and has played a key role in promoting UNICEF’s advocacy, awareness and fundraising objectives. In 2003, following a fact-finding mission to Cambodia, he launched UNICEF UK’s End Child Exploitation campaign.
David was awarded a CBE in 1982, received a Knighthood in 1995 and was appointed to the House of Lords in 1997. In France he has been honoured as a Chevalier (‘85), Officer (’92) and, most recently (2006) Commander of Arts and Letters.
Lord Puttnam’s lecture at FACT will address two of his key interests: it will focus on the potential of digital technologies to transform education and the way we learn, and also consider their possible impact upon politics and their capacity to renew political engagement, especially among young people.
The Roy Stringer Lecture is named after FACT’s late chairman who was instrumental in the development of the organisation. Roy Stringer was one of the early pioneers of the digital media industry, producing his first interactive animation in 1983 on an Apple Lisa. A ‘Hypermedia Architect’, Roy was the creative visionary behind many award winning projects; for setting up Amaze, (the pioneering web company); and for nurturing the talent and championing the development of the multimedia industry in the North West of England and further a field.
