Liverpool Town Hall – Merseyside Polonia Exhibition
Tuesday 1 and Wednesday 2 September 2009
Two-day exhibition which Liverpool Town Hall commemorating 70th Anniversary of the beginning of World War II. On 1st September 1939, Poland was attacked by Nazi Germany and led to Britain going to war on 3 September 1939. The purpose of this event is to commemorate these anniversaries and to remember those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.
The idea of the Exhibition is to show through the photographs of wartime damage the similarities of experiences of people in Liverpool and in Gdansk, in England and in Poland.
The Gdansk Exhibition is by courtesy of Historical Museum of the city Gdansk with amazing photographs by Janusz Uklejewski.
The young people from Yellow House add to the exhibition contemporary images of Gdansk through photographs they took during their visit to Gdansk, alongside similar images of their own city, Liverpool.
The Liverpool Exhibition was selected by Merseyside Polonia from the archive at the Liverpool Record Office – great thanks for all their help – and reprinted with the permission of Merseyside Maritime Museum and The Times.
Very emotional images inspired Gosia McKane to write a poem empathising with the people of Liverpool who at the end of the war saw their city totally devastated but nevertheless with “Liverbirds still standing high in the city that never gives up.”
