UNIVERSE’S MYSTERIES EXPLORED IN SCIENCE & ARTS COLLABORATION

A new project combining cutting edge space science with performance is underway and will be premiered at the European Week of Astronomy & Space Science (EWASS) in Liverpool on 3rd April.

The work is being developed by Liverpool John Moores Astrophysics Research Institute, working in collaboration with arts collective Operation Lightfoot. The performance will consist of a number of smaller pieces, each themed on a particular aspect of the work done at the ARI, such as remotely operating the Liverpool Telescope based in La Palma, developing a clearer understanding of star and galaxy formation, and even applying techniques used in astronomy to improve wildlife conservation. The collaboration will also provide an opportunity for several students at John Moores to gain experience working on a unique multimedia piece.

“I’m thrilled to have been commissioned to work in collaboration with the Astrophysics Research Institute at LJMU”, says Luke Moore, composer & artistic director. “It’s clear that there’s some amazing space science happening right here in Liverpool. The creative team that make up Operation Lightfoot can’t wait to develop it into a very special performance”.

Helen Jermak, instrument scientist on the Liverpool Telescope, says “The ARI are really excited to work with Luke and Operation Lightfoot. It’s not often we get a chance to express our research through the media of music and dance and we are excited to share this with our European colleagues.”

EWASS opens on 3rd April at the Arena and Convention Centre and the programme will include a number of public events throughout the week. The piece, titled “Above Us Only Stars”, premieres at EWASS and will receive its first public performance at Across the Threshold on Friday 13th April.
