As you can see, we are already having some fun with these penguins but they won’t actually appear on the streets until mid-November when the weather should be more to their liking. Some excellent ice penguins soon melted in the evening sun here on the roof terrace of the lovely new Mersey Ferry terminal.
Similar to 2008’s very successful Go Superlambananas, Wild in Art and Liverpool Council are calling on artists, schools, communities and businesses to get involved in the project which will result in many colonies (or ‘huddles’) of decorated penguins around the city from mid-November to early January.
The team are inviting schools to adopt a 3ft penguin – for just £450 – which can be designed in any fun and creative way they like and will then go on display in a city centre indoor venue. The school will get to keep their personalised penguin once the trail has finished.
Artists are also being asked to come up with designs for the 5ft penguins, with sponsors picking the designs they want to represent themselves or their organisation. Designs have to be submitted by the end of August. Businesses can become Penguin Patrons by sponsoring their own work of art for £3,000.
