Wael Shawky: Drawings and flags from ‘Cabaret Crusades’ 1-24 July

Wael Shawky is a prominent contemporary Egyptian artist; his work spans film, animation, drawings and sculptural installations forcing us to question myths and truths. He re-tells the story of the Crusades, blurring good and evil, aggressors and victims. What at first sight appears to be charming and harmless, soon reflects a darker side. Wael Shawky’s film Cabaret Crusades is also shown at the Bluecoat on Sunday 3 July at 3.00pm.

My Father’s House: The Architecture of Cultural Heritage Friday 1 July
John Moores University, Design Gallery 10am-5pm (closed weekends) FREE
‘My Father’s House’ explores the Gulf through architecture from soaring towers in Dubai to the houses of Yemen, exploring the role of cultural history in defining identity. Curated by Sean Williams and produced by the British Council. Featured artists are Wed Abduljawad from Saudi Arabia; Hafiz Ali from Qatar; Boushra Almutawakil from Yemen, Lamya Gargash from United Arab Emirates; Camille Zakharia from Bahrain and Tim Hetherington who tragically died in the recent conflict in Libya, Tim Loveless and Hazel Thompson from the UK.

Dia Batal: Cart-o-Graphy 1 – 10 July, at various locations FREE
Dia Batal collaborated with Liverpool Arabic Centre and the Art & Design Pod at Liverpool John Moores University to create a mobile cart. Inside are visual and audio histories of migration of Liverpool’s Arab community. See it at the Bluecoat on Saturday 2 & Sunday 3 July and at the World Museum on Wednesday 6 July.
