Speke with curators for Museum of Liverpool display
Curators at National Museums Liverpool are inviting seasoned Liverpool holiday-makers to help research a community display bound for the new Museum of Liverpool, opening 2010/11.
Come Fly With Me – A People’s History of Liverpool Airport will uncover people’s experiences and memories from the 1930s to today, using their souvenirs, photographs and personal accounts to tell the story of Speke Airport
People with memories to share, or photographs and souvenirs bought on holidays flying from the airport, are invited to come along to one of the Museum of Liverpool’s drop-in sessions to speak to curators about how they can get involved in contributing to the display which will appear in the new museum’s Global City gallery.
Lizzy Rodgers, community exhibition officer for the Museum of Liverpool said: “We’re looking to chat to people who have used the airport any time from the 1930s onwards. The display is going to be made up of objects and memories taken from the local community, so it’s important we gather as much information as possible. We’d love to include an authentic ‘straw donkey’ souvenir if possible!”
You can drop-in to meet the curators from 10am – 5pm on Thursday 6 August at BBC Radio Merseyside or Friday 7 August at Liverpool John Lennon Airport.
Lizzy continued: “We’re really pleased we’ve been able to hold one of the drop-in sessions at Liverpool John Lennon Airport as hopefully we’ll be able to attract some regular visitors to the airport and speak to them before they catch their flights.
“So, if you’re off on holiday from the airport on Friday 7 August, and fancy a chat before you board your flight, come and say hello! Even if you’re not off on your holidays, you’re welcome to pop along anyway. We’ll be in the retail area on the upper floor of the airport terminal building before Security Control.”
Both drop-in sessions will include craft workshops where people can make their own aerodynamic creations, and the aeroplane that covers the greatest distance over the course of each session will win a prize!
People attending the drop-in sessions needn’t worry about bringing objects along with them on the day, as National Museums Liverpool can arrange to loan the items at a later date. If you wish to bring holiday snaps along with you, curators will be able to scan these during the drop-in sessions, so you don’t have to part with your treasured photos.
