National Museums Liverpool will lengthen its celebration of Heritage Open Days, which run from 12-15 September, with a whole month’s worth of activities, events, talks and tours.
There will be a rare opportunity (13, 14, 15 September) to see inside the Oratory, the grade I listed building which is located in the grounds of Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral and was the former chapel of St James’ Cemetery. The Oratory now houses an extensive collection of 19th century sculpture.
On William Brown Street, the Walker Art Gallery will offer special introductory tours which will discuss the history of the building and collection highlights.
Visitors to the Museum of Liverpool will learn about the lost buildings of the city in a series of talks on 14 and 22 September. Topics include Liverpool’s overhead railway, the Liverpool Sailors Home and Gerard Gardens. There will also be family activities as children take part in a special ‘Sunday Crafternoon’ (15 September). Little ones are encouraged to bring along a box and make a building inspired by Liverpool’s skyline.
Those interested in the Albert Dock will be able to learn more about the history of the warehouses and see the original historic plans at the Merseyside Maritime Museum in two separate talks on the 12 and 19 September.
Out of town, visitors to Sudley House in Mossley Hill will be able to take a grand tour (14, 15 September) of Sudley’s grounds and learn more about how the house and its surroundings have changed since the 19th century. Then, at the Lady Lever Art Gallery, there will be tours and activities on offer in relation to the area’s fascinating heritage.
