Laura Davis, the Daily Post Arts Editor takes her place on the fourth plinth on Sunday 12 July 2009 at 13.00 – with a penguin!

AS SOMEONE known for being accident prone, I am perhaps not the best person to be standing on a 5m-high plinth in one of London’s most famous landmarks, but when I heard that Antony Gornley was inviting people to take part in a living sculpture I just had to take part.

I applied along with everyone else, through a website that chose people at random, and on Sunday at 1pm I will join the hallowed ranks of the “plinthers”.

During my hour I will be making origami birds from colourful squares of paper – my dad used to make them for me and my sister when we were little and we’d colour them in. A colleague suggested they could replace the pigeons that no longer flock to Trafalgar Square since they banned feeding them. I would like to pass them down to the crowd below but I’m not sure if the safety nets will be in the way.

I will also try and livestream my view to the LDP website.

There will also be a friend with me on the plinth – a baby penguin. One and Other rules state that you can take anything you can carry as long as it isn’t living, but that’s okay because he’s made of fibreglass. At 3ft tall he might steal my limelight but I like the idea of promoting my city – he’s from the Go Penguins public art trail that is taking place in Liverpool this winter.

In the meantime I will be constantly chanting my new mantra: “Don’t fall off, don’t fall off, don’t fall off…”

(Laura will stream live video below from the Fourth Plinth on Sunday between 1pm and 2pm)
