Carter Preston Prize Exhibition Winner announced at Bluecoat Display Centre

Bluecoat Display Centre are very pleased to announce the winner of the inaugural Carter Preston Exhibition Prize 2016 is ceramic artist Lanty Ball.

Lanty was chosen from a group of 6 artists, due to the excellence in design and making of his works. (This exhibition is now open and continues until 20th August 2016).

Lanty’s collection includes a range of bowls & vases made from parian, a type of porcelain developed in the 19th century to imitate marble. External surfaces of vessels are incised with parallel lines, fracturing the clay. (This texture is reminiscent of fragmented patterns found in eroded geological formations.)

Each piece is unique due to being hand carved and the flow of the incised lines. Carved exteriors create a sense of movement, contrasting with the stillness & solidarity of the vessel forms. Lanty is currently studying an MA in Ceramics at UCLan, having previously gained a BA in Contemporary Crafts.

The Carter Preston Prize exhibition has invited applications from artists working in all craft materials. The panel of judges happened to select 6 artists, all practicing ceramics.
Other shortlisted artists for the prize were Yasmin Lennon-Chong, Jane King, Susan Nemeth, Malene Hartmann Rasmussen, and Jo Taylor.

There is also a People’s Vote during this exhibition which will award an In the Window exhibition prize in 2017 for the most popular artist. The result of the People’s Vote will be announced during the final week of the exhibition, (date to be confirmed.)

This new exhibition prize is to be held biennially in Liverpool in memory of the potter Julia Carter Preston.
