Brazilica Festival Announces Charity Zumbathon®

BRAZILICA FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES CHARITY ZUMBATHON®
HUGE CROWDS EXPECTED TO DANCE ALONG IN LIVERPOOL ONE

One of the largest Zumba® events to take place in the UK in 2011 will storm into Chavasse Park, Liverpool ONE as part of the BRAZILICA Festival on Sunday 17th July 2011.

The three hour charity Zumbathon®, organised by Orb Events, Liverpool ONE and Ritmo Fitness will raise funds for two registered charities, the Marie Curie Hospice in Woolton and Liverpool Carnival Company.

Michael Horsley of Ritmo Fitness will lead the event, with help from several different sets of Zumba® fitness instructors including Movéma and Charlene Denoon, Janice McDonald, Mandy Denoon  and Jenny Mason, who recently organised a highly successful Zumbathon® in Wavertree, Liverpool. Brazilica is hoping to beat their total number of participants, with people expected to travel from across the North West to take part.

In the spirit of the Brazilian themed festival and in keeping with the Zumba® fitness movement, the majority of the music and dance styles involved will be South American in origin including Samba, Reggaeton, Salsa, Axe and Merengue.

The Zumba® Fitness program consists of a contagious blend of Latin and international rhythms that provides a fun and effective workout to a global community and can be done in a gym or at home.  Since it began in Colombia in 1990, Zumba® has worked its way into the fitness regimes of over 12 million enthusiasts in 125 countries around the world, boasting that an individual can burn up to 1000 calories in an hour long session.

The Zumba® program asks its participants to ‘Ditch the workout and join the party’ and a party is certainly what participants will get at the BRAZILICA Charity Zumbathon. Organisers ask Zumba® virgins to come along and see what it’s all about, or if you’re already hooked, then take the opportunity to do three hours of your favourite exercise, all for a good cause!

Michael Horsley, Director of Ritmo Fitness and organiser said:

“’Ritmo’ means rhythm in Brazilian Portuguese, so naturally I was really excited to get involved with the Brazilica Zumbathon as my organisation has such strong links with all things Brazilian.  I’m really passionate about Latin music and being a personal trainer, it’s great to see how much Zumba can help people of all ages reach their fitness goals. There really is no other way to get fit and stay in shape with as much fun thrown in as there is with Zumba. I can’t wait to get onto the stage on 17th July and see all of those lovely people giving all they’ve got for this great cause!”

Donna Howitt, Marketing Director at Liverpool ONE said:
“Chavasse Park is the perfect location for this giant Zumbathon. It’s a great opportunity for everyone to have a bit of Zumba fun in the great outdoors, right in the heart of the city centre. Come along and join us for what’s set to be a fantastic day.”

Marie Curie Fundraiser, Antony Jones said:
“It’s absolutely fantastic to be involved with Brazilica this year. We’re so grateful to be one of the beneficiary charities of the Zumbathon. The funds will make a big difference to our patients and their families.  Between the Zumbathon and our next trek to the Brazilian Rainforest in September 2012, the hospice has a real South American flavour at the moment, all the staff and volunteers have really caught the ‘Latin fever’!

“Money raised from the Zumbathon will be used to support the Marie Curie Hospice, Liverpool which provides specialist medical and nursing care, with the expert help of multi-disciplined healthcare professionals, to 1,150 local cancer patients each year. For more information about the Liverpool Hospice Brazil Trek call 0151 801 1412 or log onto www.mariecurie.org.uk/trekforliverpool2012 ”

Liverpool Primary Care Trust (PCT) is supporting the event as part of the Decade of Health and Wellbeing. Liverpool PCT Chair, Gideon Ben-Tovim, said:
“We’re using the Decade of Health and Wellbeing to spread the word about the  importance of feeling good and functioning well. The Zumbathon is a great way for people to get active, connect with others and learn something new, which are all key elements of maintaining personal wellbeing.”

Tickets, priced just £5, are now on sale and It is hoped that over £5,000 will be raised for charities on the day. Tickets are available from Zumba® instructors throughout the North West and from brazilicafestival.com.  Groups wishing to take part should contact Orb Events on 0151 707 0965 or brazilicazumbathon@orb-events.co.uk for more information.

BRAZILICA will be a massive 3 day event taking place across Liverpool. The festival is an exciting expansion of Liverpool Carnival Company’s hugely successful carnival parade, which has existed since Liverpool’s Capital of Culture year in 2008 and attracted over 30,000 spectators in 2010. With irresistible rhythms, extravagant costumes, sparkling dancers and colossal floats there is guaranteed to be plenty of glitz and glamour and EVERYONE is invited to join in the celebration!

As Liverpool’s love of all things Brazilian continues to grow the links and similarities between Liverpool and Brazil are becoming ever clearer. Our mutual love of sport, celebrated footballing histories and strong sense of community spirit mean that we have a lot in common.  BRAZILICA will celebrate this link and all things Brazilian when it stomps into Liverpool this July.
