A series of public events this September will open a window on the work of homeless and vulnerably housed artists in the city as part of Art in Crisis, a national arts programme organised by homelessness charity Crisis
Art in Crisis will feature a range of exhibitions and activities across the country from Friday 4 – Monday 21 September 2015 revealing how art allows us to find our place in the world.
Liverpool highlights include a pop-up creative space in the centre of the city, a unique tour of the REALITY exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery by Crisis clients, and a special performance by the Crisis band at the Hope Fest music festival.
Alongside the events in Liverpool, there will also be exhibitions and activities nationwide highlighting the role of art in ending homelessness and across society, including outdoor art sessions in London’s Spitalfields Market, a collaborative photography exhibition in Birmingham and innovative drama performances in Edinburgh and Oxford.
Jon Sparkes, Chief Executive of Crisis, said: “Homelessness is a devastating experience, with confidence and motivation quick to suffer without the security of a home. Be it drama, music, drawing or dance, making art can help to spark a sense of self, producing focus and a clear outlook in the future.
“Engaging with creative activities encourages all of us to explore ideas together, finding new ways to see the world and our place within it. Art in Crisis will celebrate the role of art, both in ending homelessness and across society, revealing how it offers people a way to move forward with positivity and purpose.”
Crisis runs a range of art classes at its eight centres across the UK, helping people build social skills and regather the confidence to move on to education and training. Last year, the charity helped 550 homeless people into secure employment.

Art transforming lives: a practical investigation

An afternoon exploring the way that Crisis and other organisations work with artists and the arts to make a difference to people’s daily lives and, in the case of Crisis, help to keep people out of homelessness. A chance to to exchange and investigate shared aims, strategies and approaches between cultural institutions and service providers.

Art Is…Transformation – Launch event

Join us for an evening to celebrate the opening of the Art Is…Transformation exhibition. The celebration will include music from Crisis clients before their appearance at Hope Fest, spoken word from Crisis poets and refreshments.

A showcase of work made in Crisis art workshops explore the theme of ‘transformation’ through painting, photography and objects.

Crisis clients will lead tours of the REALITY exhibition, sharing their own fresh perspective on this exhibition of vibrant British painting and influential artists’ work.
Royal Academy Workshop

Join us for a very exciting opportunity to work with world class artists from the Royal Academy of Arts. For one day only we are opening this regular workshop and inviting the wider public to test their hand at drawing alongside our members.

Hope Fest Music Festival

Instead of paying an entrance fee, festival goers are asked to donate a ‘Hope Pack’ made up of essentials such as food and clothing which will be passed on directly to homeless people in Liverpool via Hope Fest’s partners.
