AlTurnertive Turner Prize – Winner Announced

Merseyside Stop The War Coalition held the award ceremony on Saturday December 1st 2007 in The Piazza restaurant in the Metropolitan Cathedral.

The evening was a great success following the launch of the exhibition at ViewTwo Gallery in Mathew street on Thursday where Jimmy McGovern and over 100 people attended.

The winner was announced by the actor Dean Sullivan .

The Winner was A sculpture entitled , “10,000 men ” actually made of 10,000 toy soldiers dipped and held together by acrylic blood pigment.

The poem “The grand old Duke of York,he had 10,000 men, he marched them up to the top of the hill ?.. accompanies the work.
The artist, 45 year old father of 3, Jamie Andrews, lives in Lowestoft Suffolk.He is an artist and lecturer at City College Norwich. He is pleased to recieve the award and has donated the prize to Merseyside Stop The War Coalition in support of their campaign to bring the troops home and their opposition to war with Iran.

10,000 men can be seen in View Two gallery Mathew Street Thurs Fri Sat 12pm-4pm

The following are the six finalists who were runners up for the prize . They received prizes donated by local businesses and a certificate in recognition of the quality of their work also awarded by Dean Sullivan.

David Webster – Why Brother ? – exhibited outside The Peoples Centre Mount Pleasant
Julie Mcdaid – Solution – The Quarter Falkner Street
Christine O’Reilly Wilson – Fight for Freedom – View Two Gallery Mathew Street
Sheila Shaw – an outcome of War…. displacement – View Two gallery Mathew Street
Tanya Stevens – – Women of Poverty and oppression – The Peoples Centre Mnt. Pleasant

All work is for sale and the exhibition runs to December 22nd 2007

In View Two as part of the Exhibition is a piece of work on loan by the famous London anti war artist Leon Kuhn. It is a magnificent triptych called Market Madness alone worth the visit.
