The course is spread over three weeks and broken down week by week into these categories –

Class One – Textiles and Machine basics – 2hours

There are literally thousands of fabrics available in the shops. Most peoples choice according to their pattern or the colour of the fabric, but how can you be sure that your fabric choice will be the right one to make the perfect garment. Class one will help you confidently choose fabric to make your garment. Topics covered include –

  • Natural & synthetic fibres and their properties
  • The difference between woven and knitted fabrics
  • Light wieght and heavy weight fabrics
  • Stretch fabric

A simple black material will be provided for you but there will be an opportunity during this class to purchase a different colour to the one provided if you would prefer. This class will also explain how to set up your machine, correct thread & needles, threading the machine up and practise. There will be ample time to practise sewing pieces together in preparation for the second class.

Class Two – Cutting and Assembly – 2hours

The second class will concentrate on using the pre prapared pattern to cut out the material. You will provided with a pattern of your choice in the correcxt size and will have an opportunity to make a copy of the pattern to take home so you can make as many shorts and trousers as you like. After all the material is cut out you can begin sewing certain sections of the shorts or trousers together ready to finish off in the third and final class.

Class Three – Overlocking and Finishing – 2hours

The remaining panels can be finished off at the beginning of the third class and the raw edges of the fabric will need to be finished off to create a neat edge using an overlocker. The Hem and elastic waistband will be added at this point to complete the shorts or pants.

This beginner course is a brilliant start for anyone completely new to sewing. If you have a machine you would like to use please bring it with you to all three classes. There are sewing machines available to use at no extra cost if needed.

The number of people on each course is limited to ensure a friendly and thorough teaching experience. Complimentary tea and coffee and biscuits will be available each class and there will be handouts covering some of the information discussed in class to refer to after you have finished the course.
