RIBA North: ‘Just come in’: 30 years of Maggie’s centres
Date: 12.9.26 - 29.11.26
Time: 00:00
Location: RIBA North, 21 Mann Island, Liverpool Waterfront, Liverpool, L3 1BP
Inspired by Maggie’s life as a writer, gardener, and designer, each centre is shaped around light, warmth, domesticity, and a close connection to nature, placing people at its heart.
Today, Maggie’s is a network of more than 30 centres across the UK and internationally, many recognised through our awards programme. Marking 30 years of Maggie’s and 60 years of the RIBA Awards, this exhibition celebrates a selection of RIBA Award-winning Maggie’s centres celebrated for their exceptional social, cultural, and civic value.
Through a new photographic commission, Tabitha Jussa documents these centres and the everyday moments of comfort, conversation, and pause that unfold within them.
Alongside the photographs, you can also read Jussa’s personal reflections on the responsibility of documenting spaces that support care.
The exhibition considers the enduring ethos of Maggie’s and the role architecture can play in providing support, calm, and reassurance.
Together, they reveal the importance of thoughtfully designed environments and how they can offer dignity and connection in times of uncertainty.
About Tabitha Jussa
Tabitha Jussa is a photographic artist based in Liverpool. Her work explores the relationship between people, place, space, and time.
By questioning the traditions of film and digital photography, Jussa’s fascination with how people transform place and vice versa is also shaped by her approach to documenting and ultimately making pictures – how photography can be used to explore socio-political challenges evolves alongside the people, places and spaces she explores. By creatively fusing traditional film and digital photography, Jussa has developed a distinct way of image-making.
Her work has been exhibited internationally at venues including The Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool; ShangART Gallery, Shanghai; the House of Commons, Westminster; The Grundy, Blackpool; Ffotogallery, Penarth; and Torrance Art Museum, California.
In 2013, Jussa received both the Judges’ Award and the People’s Choice Award at the Liverpool Art Prize, and in 2018 curated the exhibition Common Ground, which featured works by Tom Wood and Ken Grant.
