Throughout Chinese New Year there are lots of different activities happening around the City Centre – Great George Square has a busy day of activities that you can take part in and come along and see – for a full timetable, just take a look below.
Family Zone & Stage: 11:00am – 4:30pm
This year Great George Square will feature a new and exciting family zone with our little pagodas, family arts workshops, street theatre, art installations and the Black-e Youth Circus Aerial performance. Come along and see the Chinese Opera characters, beautiful performances, and make something special to take home.

The Clapping Hands is one of the most popular exercises in China at the moment. Every early morning, people will gather in the park, doing this Clapping Hands exercises. It supposed to help you with blood circulation round your body and it is very simple. Further activities at Pagoda Arts Centre, Henry St till 3.00pm.
1.00 – 2:00pm Firecracker Display – Lucky Man, Dragon and Unicorn
Symbolising the “sounding out” of the old year and “sounding in” the new year, it’s a traditional Chinese custom to set off firecrackers when the New Year clock strikes. This firecracker display is one not to be missed as the Lucky Man joins the Dragon and Unicorn to see in the New Year!

3:20 – 4:30pm Liverpool Confucius Institute and Everyman & Playhouse
The students from Liverpool Confucius Institute will be performing a programme of Beijing Chinese Opera and street theatre.
- Traditional Music: with traditional Chinese instruments
- Song: modern Chinese songs and traditional song.
- Dance: including traditional lotus dance, Dai Ethnic dance and sleeve ribbon dance
- Magician: magic show including traditional rings trick
- Chinese Opera: performance with 18 traditional characters in elaborate costumes on the theme of the celebrations of the return from war
4:30pm CLOSE
5:00 – 6:00pm Chinese New Year Lumiere – Jingwei & the Ocean
This spectacular light and sound show takes place in Liverpool’s Chinatown at the junction of Berry St, Great George Street, Nelson St, Chinese Arch. Based on the story of the emperor’s daughter who, after perishing at sea, is transformed into a bird and endeavors to fill the ocean with twigs and stones to prevent anyone else from meeting the same fate.
