CANOPY: A Year in Trees

Join us at the launch of a dot-art exhibition by Madeleine Pires, Hazel Thomson and Rob Edmondson, three artists whose practices explore landscape, nature and our experience of particular places.

Here in the city centre, surrounded by buildings and the activity of urban life, it can be easy to overlook the quieter changes taking place around us. Yet the seasons are still visible in the trees that line our streets and parks: fresh green leaves in spring, the fullness of summer foliage, the changing colours of autumn and the bare branches of winter. CANOPY invites us to pause and notice these changes.

Madeleine Pires

For Madeleine Pires, the natural world is a constant source of visual and spiritual inspiration. The curves of branches, leaves, clouds and the movement of wind through foliage become ways of exploring deeper connections between nature and human experience.

Her relationship with the natural world also extends beyond the canvas. In Liverpool, Madeleine created her Flower Streets Murals, transforming overlooked terrace ends in Kirkdale into vibrant, inspirational paintings. The project brings colour and imagery inspired by nature into the neighbourhood, reflecting her belief in art’s ability to affect how people experience their surroundings and bring hope.

Hazel Thomson

Hazel Thomson is a multi-award-winning artist whose work has been exhibited and sold internationally. Her richly textured paintings are built through layers of paint and marks made with a palette knife, creating a sculptural surface across the canvas.

Combining elements of realism, contemporary painting and impressionism, she aims to capture the atmosphere of landscapes across all four seasons and different times of day, giving the viewer a sense of calm and solitude, as though they are physically present within the scene.

Rob Edmondson

For Rob Edmondson, landscape begins with a strong connection to place. His representational paintings draw on landscapes across the UK as well as places he has visited abroad, including New Zealand, the USA and the Mediterranean. Composition is central to his practice, while colour, light and movement help him capture what he describes as the ‘soul’ or mood of each special place.

His work is rooted in close observation but is ultimately concerned with more than simply recording what a place looks like, it is about conveying something of how that place feels.

The works in CANOPY explore trees not in isolation, but as part of wider environments: places of solitude and contemplation, celebrations of colour and life, and reminders of the living world that surrounds us and the unstoppable march of time.

All artworks are for sale.
