Sunday 16 February, 1 and 8 March, 11:30am – 5pm, £125 for 3 week course
This 3 day course will give people an introduction to the basic techniques of pastels, and how to use them to create beautiful landscapes and portraits. Soft pastels are one of the earliest art materials, and throughout this course we’ll look at how artists from the 16th century to modern day, have used pastels in their work.
Each session will include timed drawing sessions, creating finished works step-by-step as a group, receiving group feedback and guidance from artist Mia Cathcart.
Day 1 – Basic Techniques
We will begin with an introduction to soft pastels, with a brief look at how it was used in art as early as the 16th century. With a look at some of the pioneers of soft pastels, to more contemporary practitioners, we’ll get an idea of kind of breadth of work you can make with pastels! On the first day, we will learn the basic techniques including; blending, colour mixing, cross hatching, stippling and more. We will start with some basic drawings, colour-blending and quick landscapes.
Day 2- Landscape
Using the techniques learn on Day 1, will focus on composition and colour to create a perfect landscape. We will practice with several different landscape scenes, from beach to sunset. In Day 2, you’ll learn how to use layering techniques to get finer detail into your art work.
Day 3 – Portrait
In the final day, we will be each drawing a portrait. We will start with some timed life-drawing of one another, to pick up basic skills. Then, working from photograph, we will learn how to measure out and draw an accurate face on paper. Finally, we will use soft pastels to create our finished portrait.

Mia is an experienced artist and tutor having led dot-art Schools workshops as well as advanced adult classes.
