PAPER Magazine is looking to appoint six resident writers based in the North West of England to contribute to the relaunch of its online art magazine. This is a paid opportunity open to writers at any stage in their career (unpublished, emerging or established) and will include training and mentorship from Sara Jaspan (PAPER Magazine Editor) and Laura Robertson (The Double Negative Editor). One writer will be funded by University of Salford and will also work with the Art Collections team; this opportunity will be offered to a graduate of University of Salford.
What’s involved
The six successful applicants will work closely alongside PAPER Magazine’s editor to each identify and generate four original pieces of critical and/or creative writing to be published between November 2018 and October 2019.
Content will relate to any of the following five categories:
* Work by local/national/international artists who explore paper in interesting ways
* Exhibitions by PAPER or other local/national/international platforms that feature paper-based work or explore paper in interesting ways
* Paper as a material (its production, social history, art history, changing cultural significance, different uses and artistic applications etc.)
* Subjects or themes identified in partnership with the Art Collections team at University of Salford
* A travel bursary of up to £100 to visit exhibitions
* One day-long workshop in Manchester with Laura Robertson
* Ongoing face-to-face and online editorial support from Sara Jaspan
* Inclusion in a hard copy print edition of PAPER Magazine (to be launched at the end of the scheme) featuring selected articles from the online publication
We’re looking for writers at any stage in their career who would like to push their practice forwards through editorial mentorship and by experimenting with alternative approaches to critical and/or creative art writing (e.g. testing new avenues of form, tone, voice and content).
Please send an email to papergallerymanchester@gmail.com (subject line ‘PAPER Magazine application’) with the following:
