Visitors are invited to a one-day symposium led by Professor Darby English from University of Chicago and The Museum of Modern Art,exploring the context of post-war American art with the aim of reconsidering its place within the museum and the academy. This symposium is organised in dialogue with Tate Liverpool’s current exhibitions Jackson Pollock: Blind Spots and Glenn Ligon: Encounters and Collisions, each deploying a contrasting curatorial strategy in order to revisit the history of post-war American art and rethink the canon.

This symposium is supported by Liverpool John Moores University and forms part of Tate’s Refiguring American Art 1945–80 research project, supported by the Terra Foundation for American Art.
