A Break with Tradition: 100 years of the Contemporary Art Society28 May – 14 August 2010
Numerous contemporary artists’ work feature in this exhibition including Bridget Riley‘s wallpaper designs for the Royal Liverpool Hospital, Philip King‘s Heart sculpture and Dennis Creffield‘s Autumn Equinox I inspired by JMW Turner.
Central to the exhibition is a wish to engage visitors with contemporary art. To encourage public interaction, visitors to the VG&M have voted on artwork for inclusion in the exhibition. Also on display is art by students from Liverpool Community College and Liverpool Adult Learning Services. Their work is inspired by Graham Arnold‘s ‘August’, which made “that fleeting memory into something more permanent and meaningful” (Arnold). It is hoped that this work will inspire visitors to reconsider their own responses to this exhibition.
Free talks and workshops accompany this exhibition.
