Bob Howells was a keen amateur photographer who built a makeshift darkroom inside the wardrobe of his Kensington home to produce wonderfully evocative images. On his death he left his grandson, Steven, two of his cameras and a tin containing film and glass plate negatives. Years passed and when Steven developed them gems from mid 20th century Liverpool life were revealed.

Bob’s images show family life, holidays and days out, scenes from his working life at Campbell and Isherwood in Bootle, and a trip to Goodison Park to see his beloved Everton FC play. The photographs, although very personal, provide a rare insight into working-class life in Liverpool in the 1950s.
