View Two Gallery: Lost Voices

unnamed27 November 2014

The extraordinary 10-piece Engine Room Favourites take over the View Two Gallery for an evening of virtuoso improvisational heat and energy.

Martin Archer’s Engine Room Favourites is an all-star big band (and a band of band-leaders) featuring some of the finest jazz and improvising musicians currently working in and around the North of England.

As well as their own projects (too numerous to mention), the likes of Mick Beck (saxophones), Peter Fairclough (drums/percussion) & Graham Clark (violin), have worked with Keith Tippett, Julie Tippetts, Gong, Ute Lemper, John Harle, Andy Sheppard, Jah Wobble, Pete King and the legendary Bournemouth Sinfonietta. Other members of the band – Laura Cole (piano), Seth Bennett (bass) and Corey Mwamba (vibes), have been regulars at Lost Voices over the last few years with a variety of exceptional solo and band projects – Metamorphic, 7 Hertz… And together with no less than three more percussionists – Johnny Hunter, Walt Shaw & Steve Dinsdale (Birmingham Improvisers Collective, Orchestra of the Upper Atmosphere), this is clearly a band with both a fine pedigree, and some very fine credits of their own.

Collectively (under Martin Archer’s thoughtful and committed direction), they pull off something of a coup- a bold re-exploration of a whole ‘forgotten’ musical tradition, referencing the legacy of the pioneers of American experimental jazz – Anthony Braxton and the AAMC, whilst offering free rein to a new generation of players…
