The Vitreum Art Gallery: A Sporting Spirit

The Vitreum Art Gallery: A Sporting Spirit

present -March 9th 2012

Pupils past and present have been enjoying an exhibition celebrating the enduring sporting spirit of Merchant Taylors’ Schools in Crosby. The Vitreum Art Gallery within the Senior Girls’ School, which is now entering its fourth year, is showcasing a multi-media installation of sporting photographs, artefacts and moving images from the Schools’ extensive archive collection. The images were chosen as a snapshot of the archives and feature images dating from the 1800s up until the present day. All exhibits are an eclectic mix of historical and contemporary images, reflecting the long, varied and successful tradition of sport at Merchant Taylors’ Schools.

The exhibition was officially opened by stalwart staff member and England International Rugby Union player, Mike Slemen, who has been teaching at the schools for over 35 years. Some of the exhibits pay tribute to talented individuals associated with the Schools; many of whom carried their sporting achievements onto county or even national level. Former pupils who have gone on to achieve nationally in sport include Ben Kay and Richard Greenwood in rugby, hockey players Kate Hendrick and Rhian Evans and swimmers Caroline and Anna-Louise Mason. Many more of the images reflect sports days throughout the years, including a 1945 juniors sack race, and team photographs, such as the 1st XI of 1939 including R A K Runcie, who went on to become the Archbishop of Canterbury. The Vitreum exhibition was scheduled to dovetail in with the end of a two year long celebration of sport at the Schools, culminating in the opening of the new Ian Robinson Sports Centre last December.

The forthcoming Vitreum exhibition, running from April 2012, will tie-in with the recent renaissance in Liverpool Printmaking, featuring the work of artists Emma Gregory, Hannah Fray and Paul Davidson, as well as recent Liverpool John Moores graduates. ‘A Sporting Spirit’ is on show at the Vitreum Art Gallery at Merchant Taylors’ Girls’ School in Crosby until March 9th 2012.
