In a major new group show beginning 17th May, The Gallery Liverpool brings to the city a unique collective of artists at the forefront of the British realist movement. An ambitious undertaking for Liverpool’s independent art gallery, REALISM positions the form within the modern art landscape and showcases major achievements in contemporary realist painting.
The exhibition will include the work of 7 established artists with shared fascination for representational art
and with styles ranging from portraiture to hyperrealism.
A strong combination of local and international artists will bring REALISM to life. Pam Hawkes’ iconographic portraiture, aptly described as ‘Modern Gothic’, will side with work by John Afflick which draws inspiration from the Baroque and Renaissance movements. Highly-detailed portraiture will be represented by published
illustrator and painter Steve Caldwell, figurative artist Sadie Lee and London-based Matthew Stradling. Modern still-life will also be featured, with meticulously painted artwork by Bryan Hible.
The artists’ approach is characterised by mastery of technique, high attention to detail and a reverence to painting techniques deployed by the old masters. The artwork on show will invite reflection on the
relationship between the artist and their environment, highlighting the role of emotion in depicting people and scenes of ordinary life.
