From 1 February – 27 April 2008, Tate Liverpool will present the first UK exhibition of the Franco-American painter and sculptor Niki de Saint Phalle. Beautiful, flamboyant, daring, provocative and fiercely independent, she emerged in the 1960s as a powerful and original figure in the highly masculine international arts world.
Niki de Saint Phalle is a cultural icon with associations with the Nouveau Realist movement and collaborations with the world’s leading artists. Her exuberant love of life is demonstrated in her bright and colourful works and darker works reflect the personal struggles of the artist.
The Shooting Paintings explored the idea of the violent gesture in abstract art and her Nanas, large brightly coloured sculptures of women have become iconic and enduring images of maternity and femininity.
The exhibition will be a comprehensive survey of the career of Niki de Saint Phalle and will explore the significance of her original and honest approach to contemporary artistic practice.

Masterpieces from the Tate Collection, including Rodin’s The Kiss (1901-14), Degas’ Little Dancer Aged Fourteen (1880-1), Picasso’s Weeping Woman (1937) and Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Diptych (1962), come to Liverpool, some for the first time, as part of a major rehang of the Collection at Tate Liverpool. The new displays, over three floors of the gallery, have been arranged to celebrate Liverpool European Capital of Culture 2008.
The first and second floors are divided thematically: the first floor looks at the various manifestations of representational or figurative art, while the second floor traces the journey towards abstraction, and examines the complexity and diversity of abstract art.
In addition to the first and second floor displays, you can see a special focus in the Ground Floor Gallery on the work of the much celebrated British artist Stanley Spencer, including some of his best-known works.
The DLA Piper Series is a display of exemplary works of international modern and contemporary art from the Tate Collection.

This informal introductory course offers a new way of looking at modern and contemporary art. It explores the dramatic changes that have taken place in the art world from the late 1800s to today, in the context of Tate Liverpool’s collection display. The course will deal with ‘the subject’, ‘the object’ and ‘the artist’ respectively over the course of the year and is led by art historians. As well as illustrated discussion–based presentations, most of the course takes place in the galleries. Each term includes an optional weekend field trip to an external art gallery of relevance. All welcome. No experience necessary.

This two day discussion-based course will introduce students to the work of Niki de Saint Phalle, examining her role as a female artist and Nouveau Realist in the 1960s and tracing her career to the present day. The course involves a mixture of interactive slide presentations and workshops in the galleries.

Niki de Saint Phalle’s Shooting Paintings explored the idea of the violent gesture in abstract art, in what can be read as a parody of the machismo of action painting. Using de Saint Phalle’s work as a starting point, this postgraduate research forum explores the gendered gestures of art. What is it in an artistic trace that makes a work embody notions of femininity or masculinity? How do these gestures fit into societal power structures of everyday life between men and women?
