Open Eye Gallery – Eye to Eye

eyetoeye-100Eye to Eye
22 July – 28 August 2010
(Thu-Sat, 2pm-5.30pm)
Eye to Eye is the first of a series of public events to be produced by Open Eye’s Young Creative Collaborators participation programme. The exhibition presents a series of group and individual projects created by the programme’s participants in response to the gallery’s historic print archive, combining new text and image works with archive objects.

Eye to Eye examines subjects and themes that have emerged from exploration of the archive, including recession, occupation, pastimes and anonymous works. The Young Creative Collaborators have organised all aspects of the exhibition, including curation, marketing, installation, interpretation and production of the opening and closing events.

Open Eye Gallery launched its Young Creative Collaborators programme in November 2009. It pilots new ways for the gallery to work with young people, and creates a foundation for future learning and participation activities. Since spring 2010 a group of 25-30 Young Creative Collaborators has been learning about Open Eye’s extensive archive of photographic prints, and about the internal workings of the gallery. The participants come from a wide range of backgrounds, with interests in photography, fine art, graphic design, illustration, journalism and cultural history.

In the next stages of the programme participants will be devising a series of talks, workshops and projects. The process is being recorded in a blog that will form the basis of a publication when the programme ends in late 2010.
