dreamthinkspeak present ‘One Step Forward, One Step Back’
World Premiere
Monday 7 April – Saturday 10 May 2008 at 19.00
commissioned by the Liverpool Culture Company as part of Liverpool 08 – European Capital of Culture 2008
dreamthinkspeak’s new work ONE STEP FORWARD ONE STEP BACK is a major new commission work by the Liverpool Culture Company as part of Liverpool’s European Capital of Culture 2008 celebrations. It will mark the company’s return to the UK, following two years of international work in Slovenia, Russia, Syria, Malaysia, Romania and Australia.
ONE STEP FORWARD ONE STEP BACK will be specially created for Liverpool’s magnificent Anglican Cathedral. The piece explores our increasingly secularised world of global economy, where regeneration can lead to development and destruction in equal measure. Inspired by Paradiso, the third section of Dante’s Divine Comedy, and by Blake’s poem Milton, the production will respond uniquely to the cathedral’s awe-inspiring interior, whilst looking externally to the city beyond, asking the question: What is Paradise?
ONE STEP FORWARD ONE STEP BACK will weave a magical journey for small groups at a time through areas of the cathedral previously unseen by the public.
Throughout the journey the company’s visual language of film, installation, models and live performance will interlink the architecture of this remarkable building with the central themes of Blake and Dante and the dramatic landscape of Liverpool itself.
The production will draw together a large team of locally based designers, technicians and performers including Mark Fleming and Studioscope, who will create the modelled landscapes for the production. Acclaimed composer max Richter will create a specially commissioned score and soundscape for the production.
dreamthinkspeak is one of the UK’s leading site-responsive theatre companies garnering critical acclaim and attracting sell-out audiences around the globe. ONE STEP FORWARD ONE STEP BACK is a highlight of the Liverpool 08 celebrations, is the first opportunity to see dreamthinkspeak’s work in its home territory for three years and a chance to see a landmark building transformed through theatre: arguably a must-see for many in 2008.
