Cornerstone Gallery: M.A.’ness

The Cornerstone Gallery presents an exhibition of works in progress made by Hope University M.A. by Creative Practice students. This work forms part of a discussion event which is to be staged during The Cornerstone Festival 2014. This is the first in a series of exhibitions in the gallery which seek to supplement the student experience via a series of contemporary art exhibitions, student led seminars and exemplars of current professional practice.​

The conversation, on Wednesday 26 November at 2pm. will be a group critique, with all undergraduate and postgraduate students invited.

Whilst studying on the M.A. Creative Practice, all students work in an external studio environment or at home.  This exhibition is an opportunity to bring together the practical work and research interests of a diverse group. The occasion to exhibit as a group in the University environ is also a chance to invite discourse from both the M.A. fellow cohort and the current undergraduates of Fine and Applied Arts.

External studio life is often a solitary affair with the artist working autonomously in an isolated environment. This time to commune and share thoughts, process and concepts is an important opportunity to best develop the works conceptual and methodological rigour. One would expect that the interaction between other practitioners and the undergraduate cohort would help influence and inform their future respective outputs.

MA’ness is a chance to ‘test out’ the students work by switching the efforts of a studio environment to an exhibiting context and give a glimpse of the artistic working methods, concepts and research. It is also hoped that the M.A. students will talk about the quality and conditions of the MA programme and give a general overview of what it is like to study at Hope.

Art is reliant on the connection with viewer and the development of the whole practice can be advanced via dialogue and feedback from others.

The ‘work in progress’ format can be an exciting proposal of future developments within an artistic practice and one which suggests possibilities and questions of further decisions to be made, passages, narratives, references and sound bites for discussion.
