Bluecoat Display Centre: Julie Arkell Solo

Bluecoat Display Centre: Julie Arkell Solo

10 March – 5 May 2012

Viewing: 9 March 17:30-19:30

A rare solo exhibition by one of the UK’s most celebrated
folk artists, Julie Arkell combines stitch, knit, found
objects, ephemera, vintage fabric and papier-mache in
her own distinctly personal style. Everything Julie creates
is produced by hand, using knitted adornments, curious accessories, ribbons and
found objects. The results are magically appealing and unique.
Julie says, “I love to make things with materials which have ‘seen life’; embroidering
words and stories onto old cloth, stitching into books and paper, repairing, darning,
making dolls, toys, jewellery and objects of eccentricity.”
Julie studied Textiles at West Surrey College of Art and Design before studying at
Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design.
Julie has exhibited across the UK including Ruthin Craft Centre, Oriel Davis Gallery,
Yorkshire Sculpture Park and Rochdale, Touchstones. Ruthin Craft Centre’s ‘Home’
book featuring Julie’s work is now in its 3rd. re-print.
Entry to the exhibition is free
