the Bluecoat: Philosophy Day

15 November 2014

11am-5pm

Free

The Bluecoat’s philosopher in residence Dr. Panayiota Vassilopoulou celebrates a year in post and the venue is holding a day of philosophy to celebrate!

Visitors are invited to discover, experience and celebrate expressions of philosophy and philosophical practice from East to West, enjoying yoga, tai-chi, food, philosophical discussions, talks and music.

The philosophy day marks the first year of the Bluecoat’s two-year Philosopher in Residence programme – the first of its kind in the country.

Resident philosopher Dr. Panayiota Vassilopoulou, from the University of Liverpool, has spent the past year contributing philosophical ideas that have helped inform the Bluecoat’s arts programme.

Dr. Vassilopoulou’s residency has put art, aesthetics and everyday life under the spotlight of contemporary philosophical thinking. This has been achieved through a series of popular public lectures, conversation with artists, practical workshops in response to the gallery exhibitions and talks by invited philosophers.

Her work over the past twelve months has been the subject of a short film by artist Tristan Brady Jacobs, including interviews with some of the participants. This will be screened on the day, along with an introduction from Dr. Vassilopoulou, followed by a discussion.

Philosophy in Pubs, who have been hosting a discussion group about a wide range of issues twice monthly at the Bluecoat for the past six years, will be holding a 90-minute event for the public.

Tea tasting sessions will be delivered by Alison Appleton and visitors are invited to move from one ‘mindful’ practice to another in celebration of the history, culture and worldwide enjoyment of tea. And there will also be singing and dance demonstrations
