Lady Lever Art Gallery: Reflections

Friday 18 March to Sunday 5 June 2016

The Lady Lever Art Gallery is set to welcome an exhibition created by Wirral community groups, including early years children to adults.

Reflections, runs from Friday 18 March to Sunday 5 June 2016, and features a diverse selection of works including paintings, prints, ceramic and textile art. A variety of groups worked closely with the Lady Lever and local artists, including the Singh Twins, who encouraged exploration of the Gallery’s unique collections and helped create work reflecting what they had seen.

There was also a special focus on the 18th Century portraits of the newly refurbished South End galleries, due to open to the public 25 March 2016.

The Singh Twins delivered workshops with St John Plessington School said: “Primarily we wanted to create a workshop that engaged students with and made connections between our own practice and the Lady Lever collections. We chose to focus on the theme of portraiture, that was not only central to our own work but also relevant to the range of objects on display at Lady Lever – including ceramics, paintings, and sculpture.

“Students were also free to draw on any of the conventions or portraiture employed in our own art. They were encouraged to think about ways of expressing something about their own heritage, personality and identity as well any other aspects of wider culture, society and the environment with which they identified or were interested in exploring.

“That is, to view portraits in their widest sense – not just as representing the physical likeness of someone but a much wider narrative.”

Susan Lunt, teacher from South Wirral High School said this of her students working on the exhibition: “It was such a pleasure for South Wirral High School to be involved in this exciting opportunity to support the Lady Lever Art Gallery as they redevelop their 18th Century portraiture gallery.

“The students thoroughly enjoyed their workshop with the visiting print artist Hannah Fray, and have learnt new and exciting techniques that they can now use with etching printmaking.

“We are now looking forward to seeing our artwork on display in the exhibition spaces as well as seeing the newly refurbished gallery spaces, especially the portraiture room of course!”

This exhibition showcases the talent that lies within the Wirral community, while also highlighting how the Lady Lever Art Gallery’s collections can inspire all.

A series of adult talks and family events will take place at the Lady Lever Art Gallery with Project Assistant, Siobhan Cull and the Education Team. For more information about the events, please visit the website
