The Museum of Science and Industry is one of the busiest and best loved museums in the North of England, with around 700,000 visitors each year. Located on the site of the world’s first inter-city railway station in Manchester, the Museum tells the story of where science met industry and the modern world began. The Museum is part of the Science Museum Group and has a rapidly growing reputation for its contemporary science programming, producing the annual Manchester Science Festival, staging major exhibitions and running science learning programmes that attract schools from across the North West. Our mission is to inspire all our visitors, including future scientists and inventors, with the story of how ideas can change the world, from the industrial revolution to today and beyond.

Manchester Science Festival is our flagship event – it is produced by the Museum of Science and Industry. It is growing in ambition, profile and reach. The 2015 Festival had over 115,000 attendees across an innovative programme of events, experiences and installations at 50 venues in the city and across Greater Manchester. The Festival is described as part laboratory, part playground, and through this the museum and partners produce ground-breaking, innovative experiences to engage audiences with science. The Festival has also been the benchmark in influencing the museum’s new year round creative science programme which is growing from strength to strength, growing our target audiences and building relationships with academic and cultural institutions in the region and nationally.

We are currently recruiting for a new Manchester Science Festival Director to drive the vision and strategic planning of the Manchester Science Festival, and lead the team in developing and delivering the annual creative science programme. You will have strong experience of leading and managing large scale programming or Festivals to time and on budget. You will be a driven and quality-focused individual. Ideally you will have experience of engaging the public with science in innovative and accessible ways. You will be a strong leader who has managed large and diverse teams. You will have experience of developing strong external relationships to support your work and organisation vision.
