Working to assist and support the everyday function of a small, independent gallery. If you love art, and enjoy doing something different each day, this will be the perfect role for you!

Smolensky Gallery is an independent, commercial gallery based in the heart of Manchester. Due to increasing workload, the gallery is in need of a new assistant to support the director in everyday gallery operations. This role would be primarily held in-person due to the necessity to work in the space with customers and other stakeholders.

This vacancy closes on the 24th August, with a view to hold interviews in the final week of August, and enter into the position in early September. Please note that this vacancy may close early if a sufficient number of applications is received.

Job Requirements

Essential

  • Passion for art and galleries
  • Experience in a sales-led or retail environment
  • Understanding of commercial gallery function
  • Experience with Canva and Google Workspaces
  • Excellent organisational skills and timekeeping
  • Patience and great interpersonal skills
  • Great teamworking ability

Desirable

  • Experience working with Shopify
  • Attention to detail
  • Experience working in a gallery environment

Job Responsibilities

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Uploading and checking Shopify listings
  • Updating the gallery website and social media pages
  • Updating sales spreadsheets
  • Responding to emails
  • Checking the progress of projects, sales, and deliveries

Sales Responsibilities

  • Promptly respond to customer enquiries during working hours, with the aim to garner sales for the gallery
  • Be proactive in speaking to gallery visitors and pitching the pieces to them in a friendly manner

Creative Responsibilities

  • Be willing to provide ideas towards new exhibitions and projects
  • Help to create documents and other assets to share with external stakeholders towards various projects such as external exhibitions, interior design projects, etc.
  • Engage with the space and its artwork, thinking of new ideas and improvements to the space
