Curatorial Assistant, Lakeland Arts

We are looking for an organised, enthusiastic and hands-on Curatorial Assistant to work across our beautiful Lakeland Arts venues.

The ideal candidate is a confident self-starter and a team player with a knowledge of art and/or social history. You are required to manage and prioritise your own workload whilst supporting the curatorial team on a day-to-day basis.

Duties will vary from administrative tasks to answering enquiries, managing bookings and liaising with artists and other professionals. You will be required to support the curatorial team with exhibitions and collections research as well as hands-on tasks such as helping with exhibition installations and collection care duties.

The candidate needs strong written communication and verbal skills; a background in an arts-related subject is not mandatory but preferred. This is an excellent opportunity to join a dynamic cultural organisation with extraordinary collections and venues.

Job Requirements

Essential

  • Excellent organisation skills and impeccable attention to detail.
  • Good proven computer skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently, remaining calm under pressure.
  • Experience of print production.
  • Excellent communication and accuracy in written communication.
  • Good negotiation skills and the ability to handle sensitive situations with diplomacy.

Desirable

  • A good knowledge of art, social history and current sector debates.
  • Experience with the care and handling of art works, including condition reporting and packing procedures.
  • Experience of working with artists.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide support to the Programme Team, from the research and development stage of a project through to its realisation.
  • Working alongside the Exhibition Manager, Curators and freelance technicians, assist with the installation of exhibitions and displays across all venues.
  • Compile condition and packing reports to museum standard, keeping records of movement and conditions of works and liaise with conservators and couriers when necessary.
  • Assist with object preparation prior to transport.
  • Arrange accommodation, travel and per diems for visiting artists, couriers etc.
  • Collate and copy-edit texts.
  • Research and request images and obtain copyright permissions for use in publications and communication materials, including website.
  • Assist with general administration, document filing and maintaining image files.
