Crossing Sectors #5: professional development programme for lens-based artists, creative producers and curators

Open Eye Gallery is delighted to be delivering its 5th Crossing Sectors – a professional development training programme exploring the role of socially engaged photography with a variety of cross-sector and community partners. This year the programme opens up places for both lens-based artists and creative producers/curators with an active interest in socially engaged practice.

Deadline for submissions of interest: 10am, Monday 3 March 2025

Programme runs: Monday 28 April – Monday 14 July 2025

The programme will support practitioners to explore the multiple ways culture can be co-authored with others and questions where contemporary art and photography practice can exist in society today.

We have invited a host of specialist facilitators from across the cultural, health, youth, educational, environmental and community settings to share their knowledge and expertise, as well as hands-on training around equality, diversity and inclusion and safeguarding.

Each session will offer practical, methodological and ethical advice and this year we are excited to invite some of our Year 4 Crossing Sector programme attendees, alongside Open Eye Gallery staff back to act as one-one mentors with the new cohort of participants.

Guest speakers include:

  • Lens Lab Project and photographer Solomon Charles-Kelly,
  • photographic artist and Art and Health hub director Daniel Regan,
  • arts practitioner, photographer and curator Bruno Castro,
  • Equality, Diversity and Inclusion specialist Ayo Barely,
  • members of the Clickmoor community photography group,
  • head of social practice for Open Eye Gallery Liz Wewiora,
  • national social care charity Community Integrated Care,
  • socially engaged artist Rachel Holliday,
  • community programme team at Royal Horticultural Society (RHS),
  • photographer and Stockroom creative programme manager Gwen Riley-Jones,
  • asylum seeker and migrant community charity SHARe Knowsley,
  • Bread and Roses counselling’s Vicky Richardson.

Our 2025 programme will also be part of an impact case study for a practice based PhD with Liz Wewiora and the University of Salford. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute your views on the role of socially engaged arts practice as part of this research once the programme is complete.

Timeline and applications

The programme will start on Monday 28 April 2025 and will finish Monday 14 July 2025 (to accommodate a number of Bank holiday Monday breaks).

As a free programme with limited capacity, we ask photographers, curators/producers or artists working with lens based media to submit a short application stating how they would benefit from the opportunity.

Please send:

  • a current CV,
  • an online link or PDF of your current practice,
  • a supporting statement (no more than one A4 side) as to why you feel this opportunity would be appropriate for you at this stage in your career.

Please also complete the online equal opportunities monitoring form.

Open Eye Gallery is committed to inclusive recruitment opportunities. We welcome video statements instead of a written statement, if applicants prefer this. If so please send a video file which is no longer than 6 minutes long.
