Artist Call: Hartley Hut Installation, National Museums Liverpool

National Museums Liverpool – Hartley Hut Installation

NML are seeking to commission an artist to work on an ceramic-based installation for the Hartley Hut.

As part of National Museum Liverpool’s wider Waterfront Transformation Project, the Hartley Hut will be opened in summer 2025 to visitors. Originally built as a shelter for the dock gatemen, the newly refurbished hut will not only provide a respite and wayfinding opportunity for visitors, but also an opportunity to delve a little deeper into the hut’s history, and the experience of those who worked in them.

National Museums Liverpool seeks to commission an artistic installation incorporating pottery from the Manchester Dock excavations which is not being retained by NML. These pottery fragments fall within 3 main groups: creamware, transferware and sugar moulds.

The final piece will artistically include the ceramic infill originally used to reclaim the land the Waterfront sits on, and link the Hartley Hut to the Museum of Liverpool, which now sits on top of the Manchester Dock. It is envisioned that the ceramic fragments will be bought together in an installation to be installed above the fireplace in the hut. The space available around the fireplace is approximately 110cmx80cm which will be the maximum dimensions available.

The budget available for this work is £3000 which includes research and development, materials and production cost.
