HLF Project Volunteers

30 years ago people with learning disabilities were locked up in long term hospitals or institutions. People First Merseyside, the regions first self-advocacy group, was set up to campaign against this.

Self-advocacy is a movement which has enabled people with learning disabilities to speak up for themselves and have rights and choices. People First Merseyside has recently embarked on a Heritage Lottery funded project called ‘The Advocacy Story’, which will ensure people with learning disabilities will also have a voice in their heritage.

Liverpool Archive currently has no records on advocacy for people with learning disabilities. By volunteering on this project you will help ensure the story of self-advocacy will never be forgotten.

We have two roles available and are looking for volunteers who can commit to at least half a day a week.

As a Community Heritage Assistant you will:

– Enable and empower people to tell their stories through oral history, exhibitions, art and performance, preserving their heritage for future generations.

– Facilitate people’s involvement in a creative and fulfilling project.

– Gain experience of working in the field of community heritage, helping to facilitate workshops and meetings with adults with learning disabilities.

– Conduct research for a Heritage Lottery funded project.
