Games Afternoon – Assistant Volunteers (Adult), Shakespeare North Playhouse

We are looking to appoint 1-2 Assistant Volunteers to join our passionate Games Afternoon Team. The role involves interacting with visitors to encourage them to join in with a game of chess, jenga or puzzles. If you have a game that you’re passionate about playing, we would love to utilise your skills in teaching others. Volunteers should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Shakespeare North Playhouse is a unique new arts venue, opened in the summer of 2022. It presents a vibrant contemporary cultural and learning programme featuring home co-produced and visiting performances, as well as comedy, music, community work, hire and events and a range of education and training activities.

Assistant Volunteers will be the first point of contact for many people joining the Game Afternoon and will be responsible for making sure visitors feel welcome, safe and engaged with during their time with us.

The role will be varied with new people attending each work until we build a Games Afternoon community.

Volunteer duties include:

  • Playing board games with café customers and Games Afternoon visitors
  • Testing out board games and jigsaws for difficulty levels
  • Learning how to play board games to teach attendees.
  • Welcoming people and pairing them up with likeminded visitors
  • Taking up lead positions in the games (e.g. timekeeper, judge, dungeon master)
  • Setting up and packing away of games and jigsaws
  • Identifying new games and puzzles for the team to purchase
  • Creating a schedule of games to try and teach each month
  • Organising friendly competitions
  • Identifying if attendees need extra support and providing it, with the help of the visitor experience team.
  • Looking out for the health and safety of your team members, visitors and members of the public.
  • Reporting any issues or concerns to the Visitor Experience Manager
