Wildlife Connections Bumblebee Garden: Artist Brief

Chester Zoo requires a visual artist to work with our visitors to create a piece of public art for display at the zoo, as part of a wider project to engage the public in the issues surrounding bee conservation and other British species.

Background

Wildlife Connections is a project led by Chester Zoo which encourages people to take action to help their local wildlife. We’re asking everybody to help create a network of safe spaces for wildlife by taking simple steps such as recording wildlife, opening up gardens to hedgehogs or toads and growing wildflowers.

As part of the campaign, we’re hosting a Wildlife Festival on the 16thand 17thof September 2016 to celebrate all things British wildlife. As the festival is a free event the majority of activities will take place just outside the zoo, where there’ll be obstacle courses, live bands, workshops and activities all to inspire everyone to take action to help their local wildlife. In addition there will be a small number of activities focused on UK wildlife taking place within the zoo boundaries. One of these activities will be the creation of a centrepiece for the Bumblebee Garden.

We would like an artist to work alongside our team and zoo visitors to create an art work for display at the zoo. As well as being a fun and creative activity for a wide range of visitors, the  process should engage participants in learning about the threats facing bees. The final artwork should be of a high quality and create a ‘wow factor’ for visitors to the zoo, drawing them in to find out more about Wildlife Connections, and specifically bee conservation. When installed, the work will be cited within the Bumblebee garden within the zoo.

Closing date for applications is 13thAugust.
